(This explains why our photos are typically rectangular rather than round.) Light traveling down the lens image circle will be captured and cropped thanks to the image sensor. The effect alters the link between the image sensor and the lens image circle. Macro and nature photographers have most use for tilt. People doing architectural photography have most use for shift. They have a lot of optical tricks that could not be otherwise produced digitally, and that’s why tilt shift lenses are a must in certain landscapes, architectural and product photography. Once again, t ilt shift lenses allow you as a photographer to go beyond the normal restrictions of DOF and perspective. These special lenses project an image circle much larger than other typical lenses. The shift feature gives the lens an optical shift room when compared to the image sensors. (This is evident when using a wide aperture, where the area to the right and left fall out of the focus range. There is a vertical focus plane on the frame meaning everything at the back and the front will remain in focus. The interaction of the lenses can be adjusted by tilting the lens from right to left, affecting how they interact. That way if you focus the lens 6 feet away, everything surrounding the object checks into sharp focus.Īn object 5 feet away under focus will remain so alongside everything surrounding it. The typical lens, sensor plane, and focus plane can be lined in parallel. It might sound quite complicated but it simply means you have room to adjust the sharp focus. The tilt-shift capability is entirely based on the Scheimpflug principle that helps minimize or maximize its in-depth photography. The goal here is to create a blurry foreground and background, exactly like if you were shooting a miniature world. Once you are done, you need to create the tilt-shift effect using After Effects. 3 – Create the Tilt-Shift Effect with After Effects Once you found the right angle along with the perfect interval, shoot the timelapse (at least 300 frames) or record a 5 min video that you can speed up in post-production, both will work great. If you don’t want to shoot a video and would like to stick with raw images, use a 0,5” interval ideally (1” can work as well depending on how fast your subject is moving). I would say, you can even shoot a video and speed that up in post 2 or 3 times for a good result. You want to be as close as possible from the reality, just a tiny bit faster. This is why it’s very important to select a fast interval when shooting your tilt-shift timelapse. In a miniature world, the toys usually move slightly faster than what a real human or vehicle would (compared to their actual size). That will make the tilt-shift effect more realistic. Try to find an elevated area around your subject in order to recreate this angle. If you are standing up, good chance, you will be looking down at a 30 to 50 degree angle on your subject. When shooting your timelapse, think that the world in front of you is a miniature world at HO scale for example. You are a bit limited when faking a tilt-shift, but they are some tricks you can use to make it look like a real one, one that you would shoot with a real tilt-shift lens. In this article, I will share with you my experience on how to shoot this effect without using a tilt-shift lens (because yes, they are very expensive and usually useful for architectural photography only).
